What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
