Two Cuba-Headed Relief Sailboats Listed Lost subsequent to Departing Mexico.
A large-scale search and recovery operation is currently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for two lost sailing vessels loaded with relief goods en route from Mexico to Cuba.
Military Rescue Missions Deployed
The Mexican government has sent naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were had on board a minimum of nine total sailors, as stated by a navy statement.
The boats had been scheduled to reach Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, authorities reported.
Background of Aid to the Nation
The Caribbean nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the nation grapples with widespread national electricity failures.
"Both crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are equipped with proper navigational gear and signalling equipment," a representative for the convoy stated.
The nine individuals on board are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Recent Humanitarian Mission
Just days before, the government in Havana widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the country.
That ship, called "a new Granma" in reference to the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, delivered solar equipment, medicines, baby formula, bikes and food.
Wider Political Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the island nation began.
International organizations have since highlighted "dire" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50k surgeries postponed in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic tensions have been ramped up lately, with remarks from several representatives highlighting the complicated state of relations.
Reacting to certain proposals, a senior official from Cuba insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Reports suggest that preliminary steps of talks had begun, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The naval forces said it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to find the sailboats and ensure the well-being of the people on board.
As of now, there has been silence on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
