The English Team to Start the European Championship 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
The England national team will embark on their Euro 2028 campaign at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they secure the expected passage for a championship staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.
City’s stadium has not welcomed an Three Lions game since the spring of 2016, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is almost certain to welcome the England side for their inaugural game on June 10, 2028.
England are set to play their last two group stage games at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top Group B, their knockout stage opener would be held at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Launch and Protest
The championship was launched at an gathering in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday evening. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were confronted as they approached the site by around fifty activists, who urged the Israeli team to be kicked out from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were held up with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Fixture List
The inaugural fixture of Euro 2028 will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a match that will include Wales if they make it.
Wembley Stadium will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for European club finals from next season, will appeal to families and help engage a wider spectrum of fans.
Qualifying Teams
The Irish team are due to play their first game at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would follow suit at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the qualifying tournament; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the qualification path.
Venues and Knockout Stage
Villa Park and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium complete the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals held at each country’s national stadium.
The draw for the qualifiers will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a host city last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.
