The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that Pluribus would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to discard a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
