Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural changes.
