Nutrition Assistance Scheduled to Expire for Over 40 Million Amid Prolonged Government Closure
Federal agriculture authorities stated recently that SNAP funds under one of the country’s largest support systems will not be distributed next month because of the continuing government funding lapse.
Closure Continues Through Its Third Week
The funding lapse was in three and a half weeks at the time of the statement, which followed appeals by more than two hundred House Democrats pushing the department to access emergency reserves to fund the upcoming nutrition payments.
“The reality is, funds are depleted,” the USDA stated. “Now, no payments will be distributed” on 1 November.
Widespread Impact
Tens of millions of people depend on these food benefits, as reported by federal data. Some regions, such as one southwestern state, dependence on this assistance affects a significant portion of citizens.
A memo obtained by Reuters showed that USDA officials chose not to tap contingency funding for the upcoming payments.
Partisan Impasse
Republicans and Democrats are still at odds about the way to fund and reopen the federal government.
A statement from the director at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities suggested that the administration had opportunities to take earlier action to prevent benefits from running out.
“Officials were able and expected to acted before now to get ready to use these funds,” the statement continued. “Instead, officials could opt out for potential political benefit” as conservative leaders work to push upper chamber Democrats to vote for a funding package that would reopen government operations.
Emergency Measures
Executives in multiple regions activated emergency protocols this week to free up resources to combat potential hunger expecting SNAP benefits not being issued next month.
