A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
