New York's next mayor confirms his intention to reside in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for most New York City mayors after the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans promptly following his victory in November.
"The choice was based on our family's safety and the imperative to focusing my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the best of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving there, the community will continue to reside within me and the work I do," he added.
Campaign Controversy
During his campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
However his critics, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it should be a place for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his previous Astoria home.
With its pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.
The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
