Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
