Israelis have assembled across the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.

The assault saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the UN and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not pose a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities delayed state memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but events still took place across the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' delegations convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the agreement.

A senior delegate involved in the discussions revealed that an evening round of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative explained the day's discussions finished without significant progress, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the deal.

He commented that the talks are "tough and have yet to produce any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to close the differences between the conflicting groups.

Key Matters in Talks

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance deliveries
  • Future administration of the territory

Citizen Sentiment

In the city's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose brother survived the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere seems like home any longer and until every captive return not a single person will feel safe."

"When we see everyone home again, we can breathe again. Then we can commence heal," she added.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their support for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel states nearly fifty continue in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be living.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the abducted to be released. But we really want assurances that we will be protected."

Surveys now consistently show that approximately seventy percent of Israelis desire the war to end in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.

Palestinian Situation

At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli shelling carried on.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and locality districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.

"Once the dusk comes, the anxiety comes with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.

"My family are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."

Humanitarian Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had taken in the remains of several people by the midday, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the south region of Khan Younis indicated another two victims had been transported. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for help to the southern area, health workers said.

Gaza's health ministry reported twenty-five of the {territ
