Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
