Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to personally create the controversial product within an individual collection showcasing issues the company was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Founders and Parent Company
This latest development escalates the ongoing conflict between the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed that Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor becoming an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur revealed via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, which match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first established in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades with the organization, citing concerns that its independence was undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence so that the company can achieve the social mission, the values that it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
