Arrangements for Trump-Putin Talks Shelved Days Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Suggested

There are "no preparations" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has announced.

Recently Trump indicated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Budapest in the coming fortnight to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House said the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".

The administration withheld additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Earlier Events

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting during a call with Putin, a day before hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources suggested his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar claiming Trump had pressured him to give up large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Russia.

Yet, on Monday the American president embraced a ceasefire proposal backed by Ukraine and European leaders to pause the war on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines the way it is," he stated.

Russia has consistently objected against pausing the existing front lines.

Moscow was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov said on this week, implying that halting hostilities would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities demanded attention, Lavrov emphasized, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of comprehensive conditions that include the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

Zelensky stated discussions about the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He additionally stated the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump recently occurred before rumors that the United States was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had turned out to be a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he commented.
