Anthony Barry Reveals His Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

Ten years back, the England assistant coach was playing at a lower division club. Now, his attention is fixed to assist the head coach secure World Cup glory in 2026. His path from the pitch to the sidelines started with a voluntary role with the youth team. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he was hooked. He discovered his destiny.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression stands out. Starting with his first major job, he developed a name for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams led him to elite sides, while also serving in roles with national teams across multiple countries. He's coached stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the top according to him.

“Everything starts with a dream … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a systematic approach that allows us for optimal success.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Passion, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies feature mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the national team spirit and avoids language such as "break".

“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”

Ambitious Trainers

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own the whole ground and we dedicate long hours toward. We must not just to keep up of the trends and to lead and set new standards. It’s a constant process with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.

“There are 50 days together with the team before the World Cup finals. We have to play a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in that period. It's about moving it from idea to information to understanding to action.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in that window, it's crucial to employ all the time available after our appointment. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships with them. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Upcoming Matches

The coach is focusing for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This period to build on the team's style, for further momentum.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach ought to embody the best aspects about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The physicality, the versatility, the physicality, the integrity. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide a system that lets them to move and run as they do in club games, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“There are morale boosts available to trainers in attack and defense – starting moves deep, attacking high up. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared now. They can organize – structured defenses. We are really trying to increase tempo through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

The coach's thirst for development is relentless. When he studied for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, since his group featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he entered difficult settings available to him to practise giving them. Including a prison locally, and he trained detainees during an exercise.

He completed the course as the best in his year, with his thesis – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard was among those impressed and he hired Barry on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. When Lampard was sacked, it said plenty that Chelsea removed nearly all assistants but not Barry.

His replacement with the club became Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he brought Barry over from Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
